If you'd allow a newcomer to your server to pipe in on this issue. It's actually the fact that your server has a history of not wiping clean its maps that was a draw for me to join you (one of my search criteria). It feels like, with some Minecraft servers I've played on in the past, people all too easily reset their maps constantly. It seems almost, to me, akin to kids who get bored with their toys so they just smash them up and ask for new ones.

For me, I appreciate when I can play in a user-built environment that has lots of history behind it. Even in single player I still keep and play on my maps I created when I got the game in Alpha. Sure, the allure of "new and shiny" can be strong... but generally I think it's a bad idea to just toss out months upon years worth of work and creations just for the temporary thrill of having everything "fresh" again.

Also, many of the servers I've played with that kept refreshing over and over again... they seemed to lose members every time they did it and never regained enough to replace the ones they lost. In the end, I can look back on a number of closed and currently non-existent servers that followed that path. Just something to keep in mind.

  2. Perhaps we can encourage people to post demo requests when they stumble upon ruins, or get staff to travel around guided by Dynmap, to HE and place a warning sign on old, abandoned looking builds and boxes with something like "This house will be demolished in one week/fortnight, break this sign to cancel the demolition".

The staff member records the location and date they visited, and then comes back at the end of the period to destroys or leave the house.
It would take a lot of work, maybe a month in total, and new staff may be required for the sole purpose of map cleaning, but i think the results would be awesome.

There could also be jobs such as smoothing out boundaries between different versions of maps, but nobody has brought this up so I guess it's a non-issue.

To encourage people to file demo requests, maybe a rupie reward, say... 10r? Doesn't seem like a lot, but it stacks heavily.

Oh ho ho... Do you know how many abandoned places in peaceful I had marked down? All of them. You know how many I have now? None! Stupid people throwing away my notes ;_; I just made a baby idea from salmon's and pie's ideas! If there was a way to make something like a mod request so somebody could log it if they come across an abandoned somethingorother and staff members would look at it and make sure it IS abandoned ie. checking chests and furnaces for recent activity and then BIPIDY BOPIDY BACON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, there are plenty of things that we need to keep. And the demolition requests are gonna be very helpful. But what I think the main problem is that the veteran players are basically playing a difficult version of survival. Now, I know that singleplayer can be like that eventually, too. But ... *useless argument stuff here*

Jim Jaffogin? :D (I forgot how to spell his name) I LOVE THAT GUY.

No map resets at all. Who wants to work hard building a lot and then the map resets? Would be to much work, confusing to players, and ruin the economy even more.

I for one, am completely in agreement with phuzzy. This map/economy has become stale. A map reset is exactly what we need to boost our numbers and keep new players. By leveling the playing field, it allows us to once again demonstrate our ability to stand out above the rest through hard work and determination. I understand each conflicting perspective, and it is a shame that we cant please everyone. Pie, I understand what you said where you have more to lose than other players, and I think I fall into that boat as well, but I know that people like us, with our knowledge, and our hard work, we again would find ourselves the better off in the new society.

So, if we go forward with a map reset, what would be kept and why? Please note the relation between resources and money: all rupies are is resources in their rawest form. To keep money and not resources only favors those with a higher liquidity. I am rich beyond my wildest dreams (resourse wise) but hardly ever have over 2k rupies. I could easily get 150k rupies within an hour, and 4 times that much if I could sell everything. If we make the move, we have to keep rupies and resources the same: either take it all, or leave it all. I vote that we leave it all. I can make it again.

MCMMO. Yes, some of us have spent countless hours grinding away to get our favorite skills up so we could have an advantage over other players. I have more to lose for a MCMMO reset than 99% of the server. But if we are going to reset, we need to do it right and reset it all, including MCMMO.

Carrying over established towns and structures: great idea in theory. But the last server I was on did this on a map reset and there was all kinds of problems. People made diamond and gold blocks and burried them in the walls of their structures. They hid chests full of expensive items. It ruined the economy and the map was again reset after only 3 weeks with no builds being allowed to follow over.

VIP vaults: Keep them. clean them out and take everything, lock them, and don't return them until the switch

As far as the active players who say that this would kill the server for them? Well, here is their options:
    1. Find a different, already established server and start all over as the underdog
    2. Quit playing minecraft altogether (they would be back, as we all do)
    3. Hit the ground running in the new map fighting tooth and nail trying to get ahead of everyone else
    4. Play single player (in which there would be nobody to see their builds and nobody to gloat their money over)

Some would be angry and leave the server, probably for a few months. Then they would miss the people here, and drop in to say "hi" and see all these new towns and alliances in their early development and wish they had just stayed and played a part in it. They would then be back, but with a late start.

One way we could do this, is to use the vanilla server as a new peaceful world 2. A large, fresh world with all the plugins of the "old" world. We would see the new world flourish with new players while the old world fades away from existance. Remember that minecraft is about bettering one's self and that is hard to do when you live in the lap of luxury with everything you could possibly want at your fingertips.

Personally, I would just like to see the whole world, vaults, MCMMO, and rupies reset to zero and watch in fascination as it all starts over again. And a week long griefing party on the old map with firespread and TNT enabled prior to the wipe. Oh, large biomes for the new world please. ;)

We will be regening a lot of the area. Towns are welcome to post regen reqs for parts (if it's big enough for that) or the whole town, or the outer areas, because we new players like to build around towns as any staff an older town know. However, we will not teraform for you. that is your own task to be completed by hand.

yeah 1.0 really screwed smp over with all the ocean biomes, the sad part is that after updating more, more land was changed to ocean biomes. DF should have an ocean biome in the middle of it (probably consuming all of it)

    wow..we've just changed sides XD
i just realized if we get new maps there is a chance the new maps would be spammed with ocean biomes, we could switch around for different maps until we find one with minimal ocean biomes, but that would take a while too. taking recommendations for seeds wouldn't be good either because someone can research the seed we used and use it find ores.

I'm cleaning up north peaceful as i type this

EDIT: thinking about it again, the entire water level is off when you regen areas/load new ones

I think this is an awesome idea, and Phuzz has some really good points.

Maybe just make a new peaceful map, and then you could perhaps create a new "new" rank which don't have perms for the current peaceful world, slowly forcing people over to the new one.

Alas, the problem with this is that I know there is a big project already very far completed in the current peaceful world, which is highly biome specific. The only way to fix this would be to copy the entire biome to the new map.

I completely hate the idea. Nothing against phuzzy. I have changed towns about twice, and it REALLY hurt to do so. I would probobly leave if we reset the map. In my experience, it never works. I have been on a few servers that did it, and all it did was lose the server it's most faithful players and make the server seem just like it did on day 1. On top of that, no new players joined for months, because nobody got started when the map was reset, and the server just dies at that point. As far as I have seen this has NEVER worked. The only exception would be cloud craft fun, and that didn't come back to life for an entire year. Anybody remember the LAST time this idea came up? People were completely opposed unless their stuff was going to get copied over, which defeats the purpose.

Arguing against nmb, but I have seen that most of the old players have stopped playing daily. Lets be honest here, If we did do a full map reset it would allow players both old and new to build something that they weren't previously able to do. Take the old terrain currently, all of it has been explored, towns have been established, and towns have fallen. The place is littered with remnants of past activity. Yes major towns like Arcadia, and Dragonforge have taken a very long time to get to their point, but don't you think that maybe the reason why people stopped playing is because of this lack of change in the server?
I just want to see a revival of the community in Shade Crest, closer knit players, better towns, more exciting pvp. To do this would prompt a map reset. I would wait until 1.4 though.

If people want maps that are reset, just go to a different server that does do map resets. That being said, resetting maps would be ok if you get to bring all the stuff you have with you to the new map.
