I created the monstamash as a place where the entire server could go and have arena style combat against hordes of mobs anytime of day, alone or with friends, free of charge. Since then, dozens of players have enjoyed the dark ambiance, wide open spaces, few defendable positions, and safe-house. I have donated a warp to this attraction, and then donated the attraction to the server for all to enjoy at their leisure. It has been brought to my attention by nrayf that the traps there are against the rules as they give the players advantages over the mobs. It is a valid argument, as even though it is not a mob spawner, it does spawn mobs. I have taken great care to ensure that the mobs spawning above have a soft landing, so as not to injure themselves prior to fighting with the players. I would hate to see the traps go, as it adds flavor to the whole fighting environment. The purpose of this thread is to openly discuss the future of monstamash; whether the traps are to be removed or not. I encourage all staff to take part in this discussion, and also the entire community as a whole. Does the traps in the monstamash give the players an advantage over mobs, or over other people? If so, should they be modified or removed all together?
The traps give players an advantage over the mobs, there's no doubt about that. And it's not pvp, so why would you even wasn't an advantage over other players? Also, as nice as a public discussion over this may be, it is and always has been solely the staffs decision.
i was there once and didn't see any... its just a dark pyramid with a safe-house room thing in the middle where you run around and kill mobs
Seeing as they're all by water, and nearly all have a way out without damage, it seems like it would hurt mobs more than players.
The water is more for having the mobs fall down from the top layer if im correct. There is another layer above, which spawns mobs. They drop into water and it does not hurt them at all. I don't think the traps were meant for mobs seeing how the XP could burn. It is mainly to give it more of a cooler feel i believe.
Alan is correct; the water is so that the mobs spawning in the upper chamber can get to the lower without taking damage. The traps are also as nrayf said, pressure plate fire traps, similar in function to landmines. I can't argue that they do damage mobs sometimes, but many players, myself included have also been the victim of them. Any other staff wish to partake in the discussion?
As I told you, the staff were already discussing this. We've decided to let it go, as it isn't intended as a grinder, and the players enjoy it.
