Over the past two months or so, I have been debating on which computer I would like to purchase with the money that I've accumulated over the years (it's great not having to worry about any other expenses yet ;D ). I have recently decided, for the sake of saving money, that I would like to give building a computer my self a try. I have been researching this quite a bit over the past few days, I believe I have narrowed my list on Amazon down quite sufficiently, I will put it below. I will also link the website that I am mainly using for instructions and precautions (it is a bit dated). Here is the list: - EVGA GeForce GTX 560 1024 MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 2DVI/Mini-HDMI SLI Ready Graphics Card, 01G-P3-1460-KR - (x2) Cooler Master 120mm Silent Case - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler - Belkin 36-Piece Demagnatized Computer Tool Kit - 24x26-Inch Desktop Anti-Static Mat - Belkin Anti-Static Wrist Band with Adjustable Grounding - Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 700-Watt Power Supply - Western Digital Caviar Green 2 TB Desktop Hard Drive - Logitech Gaming Keyboard G510 - Logitech G500 Programmable Gaming Mouse - HDMI Cable 2M (6 Feet) - Viewsonic -LED 24-Inch Widescreen LED Monitor with Full HD 1080p and Speakers - Cooler Master Computer Case Cooling R4-LUS-07AR-GP (Red) - Cooler Master HAF X Full Tower w/ SuperSpeed USB 3.0 w/ Window w/ Black Interior ATX Case - Corsair Vengeance Blue 16 GB DDR3 SDRAM Dual Channel Memory Kit - Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition Processor 3.46 GHz 12 MB Cache Socket - ASUS Maximus IV Extreme -Z - LGA 1155 - Z68 - Republic of Gamer Series - ATX Intel Z68 ATX DDR3 2200 Motherboards - Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS Main website used for research: http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/index.php Basically, what I want from you guys is: Any incompatibilities, any required items that aren't on the list, any links to websites that you find useful for computer assembly, and lastly, any personal tips or tricks that you guys have to help me get through this. Any help or share of your experiences is greatly appreciated
1) you have ESD under wraps 2) i would check with your favorite PC games to see of yout graphics card can support it (like the minecraft forums) 3) Don't forget about your operating system, 64-bit for the best 4) this laptop is awesome if your looking for a gamin one by the way: Razor Blade i have not assembled a computer myself, just for the record, but i did take a course in A+ Razer Blade - The World's First True Gaming Laptop
Thanks for the help sharq, I totally spaced out on the OS, lol XD I'm not looking for a laptop, though. They seem kind of impractical to me, unless you're using them for work. And don't worry about the graphics card, it can handle it
Thanks for all of the advice Max! The reason I chose the 990x is, of course, because it is top of the line, and I will be having this computer for a very long time. However, I might reconsider and go for a lower-quality i7. Reason being, that unless I'm working with really work-inducing applications, I don't think I'll notice much of a difference. The only thing that I do that I could really use the CPU with is 3d animation. Secondly, at the rate that technology is developing, the 990x will be outdated in the next year or two and replaced with something a ton better. I'll decide to replace the processor eventually, and I don't want to replace a $1000 dollar processor that only lasted me two years. As for the "fans, tools, and anti static stuff", I have heard mixed things about this. Some completely disregard anti-static precautions, say that a fan is only needed for sitting atop the processor, and that your only tools are your hands and a screwdriver or two, while others say that just a small amount of static can kill your processor and/or other parts, your processor will die without sufficient cooling, and you need an entire brand-name computer toolkit to assemble it. Being me, I tend to take the seemingly unnecessary precautions, and the way I see it, if I'm spending this much money on the machine itself, why risk it all by making one stupid mistake? As for the motherboard, I'm pretty content with it, but I will do further research. From what I've heard, type of RAM doesn't really make a difference, as long as it is compatible with your motherboard, and you install it in the correct order. However, a little more research can't heart. You're definitely right about the hard drive, I didn't even see the caviar black while searching on Amazon. But you might want to recheck what you said, I put down Caviar green, not Caviar blue xD I have heard good things about Newegg, I just wasn't sure if they had as vast a selection as Amazon. Once again, thanks a lot for the help Max
i also suggest an AMD CPU with no fans, keeps you warm when you heating isnt working XD MOST IMPORTANT!!!! DO NOT wear your antistatic wrist strap and touch the carpet with it, i've heard it can be fatal lol
also check out https://www.superbiiz.com/ the system builder area... you get the parts you like and they put it together for you.. they do a spectactular job tying up the cables out of air flow areas so when you get it, its so nice and orderly looking. I've gotten my last 3 computers there, decent prices, free installation.. great service. p.s. my take on -top of line-.. you pay a premium for top-of-line.. so I don't get them anymore.. also the top-of-line stuff usually has device software bugs that need to be worked out.. so.. you get a better price/performance from the second (or 3rd) down from top-of-line.. and less buggy device software.
Sharq, I don't know where you heard that, but my carpet certainly isn't carrying that much charge However, certain monitors do carry that much charge, that's why you should always leave monitor maintenance up to the professionals. Yes Max, you have expressed your passionate love for newegg to a great degree, I am in fact looking on newegg But I'm not saying if my fan shuts down, I'm saying if there is no fan in the first place, and I try to start up my computer with an un-cooled processor, then we might have a problem. I have to say though, I am saving a ton of money on newegg as compared to Amazon. A few things that I don't like are that you practically have to go under the "all products" category when searching to ensure that you find what you want, and that leaves me with all of these chairs and mini-fridges that I'm really not interested in buying xD
yeah, if your CPU heats up and cools down a lot it causes chipcreek or something, it basically cracks your CPU due to the changes in temperature, and it can also get unseated i think (not as bad as cracks though)
